Abstract: oral contraceptive usually has good effect, but you should avoid following medicines when having it, or else the contraceptive will be in vain.

Many female are using oral contraceptive to avoid pregnancy. This way is very effective with failure rate of about 1% to 2%. However, if you had following medicines with contraceptive, it may cause contraception failure.
1. Sedative-hypnotics: during having contraceptive, if you had medicine that can accelerate the metabolism of contraceptive, such as sedative hypnotics like diazepam, Librium, peace, sleep and pass and so on, it will lower the effective density of contraceptive in blood and so cause contraception failure. It is just like retreat all the solider when the war is not over.
2. Antibiotic: having antibiotic like penicillin, erythromycin, chloromycetin for a long time will affect the absorption of contraceptive and lower the medicine density in blood and so cause contraception failure.
3. Rifampicin for antituberculous: rifampicin also may accelerate the metabolism of contraceptive, lower the medicine density in blood and so cause contraception failure.

4. Anticonvulsant drug: such as Phenobarbital, phenytoin sodium, carbamazepine, primidone, and so on. When female who has epilepsy had these medicines, they all can promote the increase of medicine metabolic enzyme in cells and accelerate the metabolism of contraceptive. It also can lower the medicine density in blood and so cause contraception failure.
Therefore, when having oral contraceptive, you should tell the doctor about your taking situation if you need to take long-term medicine for reference. Or you can stop having contraceptive, or change to other ways of contraception, such as rhythm method, use condoms, or pessulum and so on.
